Gunnevera was coming in at 12-1 odds immediately following the post position draw Wednesday morning.
He gets the best post position, if historical performance is any indicator.
Drawing at number 10, that spot has produced the most winners in Kentucky Derby history at 11.3 percent. There have been 24 in the money finishes from this position as well.
Despite the favorable post position, Gunnevera had been at 9-1 odds prior to the Draw and was now at 12-1.
Gunnevera won the Fountain of Youth before finishing 3rd in his last race. Prior to this he finished 2nd in the Holy Bull and 1st in the Delta Downs Jackpot.
In a weekend workout, Gunnevera, galloped an easy mile over a fast track after the morning renovation break during the 8:30-8:45 window reserved for Kentucky Derby and Oaks horses.
“I liked what I saw this morning,” Sano said of Gunnevera, who arrived at Churchill Downs late Saturday night. “Tomorrow he will go a mile and a half and I plan to work Saturday morning.”
