The number five post position has won in nine Kentucky Derby races, three since 1999. This makes the post position among the more enticing.
Trainer Steve Asmussen said after the draw: "It looks like all the pace is to the outside. Hopefully, prerace, everything goes smoothly. Hopefully, he stands up in the gates. Hopefully, he's away from there really good. But, we're very anxious right now with a very good horse going into the Derby. He's a tremendous horse. You want a good trip to show who he is.''
Steve Asmussen-trained horses will typically have a leg up in the Kentucky Derby. Gun Runner is no exception. He is a horse expected to run well on any surface whether it be dirt, turf or synthetic based on his lineage.
In Monday’s workouts, after a half-mile in :48 1/5, Gun Runner crossed the wire five or six lengths in front of Gold Hawk in a split of :59 4/5, finishing his six-furlong work in 1:12 1/5.
