Dortmund, Firing Line Mudders? Hardly

With rain potentially in the forecast at the time of today’s Preakness Stakes race, we have to ask whether Dortmund and/or Firing Line are “mudders”, horses that like running in the slop.

We already know that American Pharoah has excelled on a sloppy track, but what about Dortmund and what about Firing Line, the two top competing horses to American Pharoah?

Bad news for Dortmund bettors:  The Kentucky Derby 3rd place finisher with 4-1 odds of winning this race has never run in the mud.

Neither has Firing Line for that matter.

There is no guarantee that rain will actually make it to Pimlico.  In past years, storms have formed around the Baltimore area without ever affecting the race itself.

A 50% chance of rain exists with storms forecast to start forming far west of Baltimore shortly after noon and closing in on the area some time after 3 pm.

How We Follow Horse Racing Has Completely Changed

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
