We don't know what the track will be like this far in advance for the 2024 Kentucky Derby, but if it's wet, we certainly have a few contenders that have already demonstrated their abilities to run in the muck.
2024 Kentucky Derby Mudders
Fierceness (+250)
Look no further than the favorite.
Severe thunderstorms were in the long range forecast for Friday's Kentucky Oaks racing with showers anticipated Saturday morning before clearing in the afternoon. This could all change with any shift in the forecast where rain is delayed Friday into Saturday. Should that happen, Fierceness is ready for it.
Back in August in Saratoga, Fierceness shook off his competition on a sealed muddy track, extending his lead before being geared down by jockey Jose Ortiz to win by 11+1⁄4 lengths in a time 1:09.56.
Sierra Leone (+300)
Sierra Leone made up seven lengths in the slop to win the Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds.
Dornoch (+2000)
The two-year-old clocked 1 1/8 miles over the muddy, sealed surface in 1:50.30 at this year's Remsen for the win. So if it looks like a wet day, this might be your horse.
Just Steel (+2000)
He finished 2nd in the Southwest Stakes on a muddy track.
Mystik Dan (+2200)
He finished 1st in the Southwest Stakes on a muddy track.
Society Man (+3600)
He's run in two races with muddy tracks. The first being the Withers where Society Man came in 8th place. He would go on to finish 1st at an ungraded Aqueduct race on March 9.
This Horse May Have Trouble
Domestic Product (+2500) has experience running in the mud, courtesy of the Remsen Stakes. But his finish was a dismal 7th in that one.
