Post positions matter in the Kentucky Derby and this year’s race will be no different.

What’s the worst starting post position? That would be number 17.

Thirty-seven horses have left from the 17 starting gate in Derby history, and none have crossed the finish line first. In fact, only three horses have hit the board after exiting the 17 (1 second- and 2 third-place finishes), Keith Sergeant of NJ.com noted.

With some scratches last year, American Pharoah actually got pushed out of the 17 spot to 16, one of the better starting gates.

The best win percentage post position is number 10 and Whitmore at 20-1 odds with Victor Espinoza will be starting from that spot.
