Gaming Commission Remains Member of Gambling Council After Questions Raised Over Ties to Kalshi

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will not follow the leads of gaming regulators in Ohio and Michigan and drop ties with the National Council on Problem Gambling over its new association with the online prediction market Kalshi. That company is fighting attempts by state regulators to treat it as a gambling operation, donated $2 million to the National Council on Problem Gambling back in May. According to the Council, Kalshi will be a platinum-level member and the first organization in its Financial Services & Trading subcategory. The fear among regulators, who are also members of the group, is that Kalshi is trying to neuter a watchdog who should be taking a critical eye on prediction markets, Gaming Commissioner Paul Brodeur said.

This is a major early game (Noon EDT) with tons of action coming in, mostly on Oklahoma (sharp action on Michigan). The Sooners moved from a -5.5 road favorite to -4.5. Betting will be heavy during the early morning hours. Oklahoma was actually around a 2.5-point underdog on an early market, so the Sooners have moved about eight points through zero to become a substantial road favorite. Michigan is responsible for much of that movement. The Wolverines barely escaped Western Michigan 13-12 last week. Bryce Underwood went 12-of-22 for 170 yards, one TD and one interception, and Michigan's only touchdown came on a 47-yard Hail Mary. Michigan had six punts and two turnovers, and coach Kyle Whittingham subsequently said starting positions weren't guaranteed.
Ohio State at Texas 7:30 pm EDT
Overwhelmingly the most obvious handle leader because of the rankings, brands, close spread and prime-time slot. It is also drawing extraordinary general interest, with secondary-market ticket prices extremely high and the game expected to set a Texas attendance record. Texas was coming in as the -1.5 favorite fort his one.
Alabama at Kentucky 3:30 pm EDT
Alabama almost always draws major recreational handle, and this is a ranked SEC road game in the 3:30 window. The Crimson Tide are a big -10.5 favorite in this one.
Oregon at Oklahoma State
Two recognizable brands, Oregon ranked No. 6, and part of the strong noon slate.
Iowa State at Iowa
Rivalry games tend to attract outsized regional action, particularly when both teams have national relevance.
Tennessee at Georgia Tech
Ranked Tennessee plus an ESPN evening slot should produce solid volume.
Arkansas at Utah
Ranked Utah, SEC vs. Big 12 flavor and a standalone late-night window. Interestingly, Arkansas has reportedly been attracting significant sharp action.

We're seeing something happening in the college football betting landscape that we don't often see: Wagering based on rage, resentment and ridicule. Dave Mason, Brand Manager for BetOnline Sports & Casino, reported Wednesday on X that Oklahoma was the most popular bet of the weekend by far, and that there were "just over two times more tickets on the Sooner spread than the number of spread bets on #1 Ohio State and #4 Texas combined." Some of the bets on the Sooners were even coming from - GULP - Michigan. Of course, these could be angry Western Michigan Broncos fans. The line had dropped from Sooners -5.5 to -4.5 overnight Friday.

Media Organizations, Local Hartford CBS Affiliate Among Those Subpoenaed by Connecticut

Connecticut issued nearly 30 subpoenas to gaming service providers, media organizations and other businesses it says may have information relevant to its investigation into prediction markets while also sending out cease and desist letters to 9 companies it says continue to offer sports event contracts in the state. Local Hartford CBS affiliate WFSB confirmed they were among the media organizations that received a subpoena. DCP said those businesses are not under investigation.
