Alleged violations include betting on one’s own team, betting against one’s own team, sharing inside (non-public) information for wagering, manipulating game outcomes, and refusing to cooperate with NCAA investigators.

The NCAA’s integrity monitoring program and network of sources flagged text messages and direct messages on social media platforms and revealed unusual betting activities around regular-season games. The violations include student-athletes betting on and against their own teams, sharing information with third parties for purposes of sports betting, manipulating scoring or outcomes and/or refusing to participate in the investigation.

Arizona State issued the following statement:

“Arizona State University is aware of the NCAA investigation and outcome related to a former student-athlete who is no longer enrolled at ASU. The university cooperated fully with all inquiries and was not implicated in any way.”

EMU issued the following statement: “EMU remains committed to compliance with NCAA rules and preserving the integrity of competition,” said EMU athletic director Scott Wetherbee. “The University cooperated fully with the NCAA staff and appreciates the NCAA’s recognition that it is not at risk for violations or penalties. We look forward to concluding the matter."

The NCAA enforcement staff confirmed that no penalties are being sought against the institutions themselves, including UNO, and that there are no allegations of involvement by school staff.

Dan Wetzel of ESPN writes that the NCAA announcement shows athletes can't win at the sports betting game.

Fresno State men's basketball was a team going nowhere, smack-dab in the middle of a dreadful 6-26 season in 2024-25. They were set to host New Mexico on New Year's Eve as heavy underdogs, up to 17.5 points.

The hopeless nature of a forgettable game might have factored into Bulldogs guard Jalen Weaver's apparent belief that no one would notice when he placed a $50 daily fantasy bet on himself.

He thought he'd score more than 11 points that night, and he did, notching 13 in the 103-89 loss to the Lobos.

Yet from the obscure and seemingly unremarkable stat line in an otherwise obscure and unremarkable game- - this ain't the Final Four -- the NCAA was able to nail Weaver for his actions.

  • On Friday, U.S. Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., and Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., reintroduced the Withdrawing Arduous Gaming Excise Rates (WAGER) Act, which would exempt regulated sports betting operators from the current 0.25 percent federal excise tax placed on all legal wagers. The bill’s sponsors say the WAGER Act will “protect legal sportsbooks and gaming businesses” and “help states like Nevada and tribal communities reinvest their gaming revenues into their local economies.” Cortez Masto and Hyde-Smith introduced the WAGER Act in July 2024, but the bill died in the last congressional session. Similar bipartisan federal legislation has been introduced in the lower chamber by U.S. Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., and Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa. Visitation to Las Vegas and Southern Nevada has declined in 2025, due to a variety of internal and external factors. Cortez Masto said now is an ideal time to provide tax relief.
