NCAA Moves Closer to Allowing College Athletes to Bet on Pro Sports
The NCAA moved a step closer Wednesday to allowing athletes and athletic department staff members to bet on professional sports.
The Division I Administrative Committee approved the change, which must still be approved by Division II and III for it to go into effect.
If approved by all three divisions, it would go into effect Nov. 1.
“The Administrative Committee was clear in its discussion today that it remains concerned about the risks associated with all forms of sports gambling but ultimately voted to reduce restrictions on student-athletes in this area to better align with their campus peers,” said Josh Whitman, athletics director at Illinois and chair of the committee. “This change allows the NCAA, the conferences, and the member schools to focus on protecting the integrity of college games while, at the same time, encouraging healthy habits for student-athletes who choose to engage in betting activities on professional sports.”

(Crime) - Suspended Osceola County Sheriff Requests Racketeering Trial be Moved to His Home County - Suspended Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez wants the trial for his racketeering and conspiracy charges stemming from an extensive state and federal investigation into an alleged illegal gambling enterprise moved to his home county. Lopez’s defense attorneys filed a "change of venue" motion Monday, asking the court to move his upcoming trial to Osceola County, instead of Lake County, where court proceedings have taken place since his arrest in June. Judge Brian Welke will consider this change of venue motion during a hearing next Tuesday in his Lake County courtroom.
- Papakos said the state is planning to call 52 witnesses to the stand.
- Estranged wife will also take part in Tuesday's hearing.
A second plea deal for one of Lopez's co-defendants could be coming soon. - Carol Cote became the first co-defendant to plead guilty to racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering charges.
The details of the Cote’s plea agreement with the state were made available in court records on Tuesday. - Cote is facing a minimum sentence of 90 days and a maximum sentence of 364 days in the Lake County Jail, followed by possible probation.

(Crime) - ‘Able to do Predatory Things’: Crime Analyst Warns Illegal Gaming Rooms Fuel Violence, Prey on Vulnerable Residents - The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office recently shut down an illegal gambling operation on the city’s Northside, arresting and accusing two people, who were employees at the illegally run business, of keeping a gambling house.
- The raid took place Friday night at a business on Haverford Road, where officers executed a search warrant on Oct. 3, uncovering multiple illegal gambling machines and seizing cash from the premises.
- The machines were confiscated and handed over to the Florida Gaming Commission at the scene.
