Padres Team Analysis

Injuries and instability undid hopes to keep pace with the Dodgers as they were expected to do heading into last season.  While they held the lead into May, even the Giants managed to pass them by.

The Padres ended the season on a sour note, going 12–34.

But now they enter 2022 at full strength.  They are certainly off to a solid start, going 3-1 heading into the series against San Francisco.

Giants Team Analysis

The Giants were among the biggest surprises last season and there is little reason to believe they won't repeat.

Well, we do have one little reason why it might not happen.  Catcher Buster Posey announced his surprising retirement and San Francisco will need to fill his shoes.

One scout offered this to Athlon:

"I still can't figure out how they won 107 games; they're very good, but they're due for a regression, especially without Buster Posey. Joey Bart has been the heir apparent, but he's a polarizing player around the league; there's a lot of swing-and-miss there, and how well can he handle a staff? They did a great job using the whole roster to keep everyone fresh, and they'll have to rely on that formula again with mid-30s guys like Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, Evan Longoria and Darin Ruf. Alex Cobb was the right kind of pitcher for them to sign; he's a bright veteran who is receptive to their ideas, and this regime works wonders with guys like that. Logan Webb has tremendous command, keeps guys off-balance and has that old-school bulldog mentality. If Camilo Doval has his command, he'll be a dominant closer for a long time. Their other bullpen guys don't strike out a ton of hitters, but Gabe Kapler always seems to put them in position to succeed. That's the job of a manager, and he's evolved into one of the best."

Recent Trends (April 10, 2022)

  • Over is 10-4-1 in the last 15 meetings in San Francisco.
  • Over is 12-3 in the last 15 meetings.

Pitching vs. Batters

  • Yu Darvish is a very good pitcher but this one also has OVER written all over it.  He's gone .272 versus Giants baters (allowing 16 hits in 68 at bats).  Mike Yastrzemshki has 3 home runs against him in 10 at bats.
  • Alex Cobb has limited experience against San Diego hitters but surprisingly has 50 at bats, against only three individuals.  Eric Hosmer has had amazing success against him, going 6 of 17 with 4 RBIs.  Manny Machado has mostly been held in check at .192.  Luke Voit is 2 out of 7 against Cobb.
