Two individuals accused of running a local Rochester, New York gambling ring appeared in court on Wednesday.

The case made national headlines as three NHL players, including Sabres former captain Thomas Vanek, questioned in connection with the probe.

Joseph Ruff and Paul Borrelli have been accused of running the multi-dollar sports betting ring out of the Marina Restaurant and Bar in Charlotte, New York.  Offshore websites were used to process wagers while local banks helped facilitate payments.

Both men face up to 25 years behind bars if convicted.

Ruff’s brother is facing similar charges in Connecticut.

Vanek is currently playing hockey with the Minnesota Wild.  In statement released by his agent, Vanek says federal authorities have asked for his cooperation in the investigation. He says he's cooperating and isn't a target of the probe or prosecution.
