Primary School Teacher Blows Away £60,000 on Internet Gambling

Women find online gambling more attractive than drugs and sex according to a report filed by the Daily Mail.

Jenny Murray is a primary school teacher profiled in the Daily Mail report.  She blew away a whopping £60,000 accessing online gambling websites and, to this day, is £18,000 in debt.

From the Daily Mail:

It wasn’t until January 2010, when she was placing a bet on the Australian Open, that Jenny noticed another little ad winking in the corner of the website: a blackjack game on bookmaker website Stan James.

‘I still have no idea why I clicked on it; I’d never even played the game before,’ she says. ‘But I put on a few £5 bets, then a few more at £25, and soon found myself £1,000 up. I was on top of the world.’

The problem, as ever, was that Jenny didn’t quit while she was ahead. ‘I thought I was smart enough to keep winning,’ she says. ‘I fell into the trap of thinking that my success was thanks to skill, not luck.

‘David and I weren’t living together at the time, so I’d start once the children were in bed. The next time I looked at the clock it would be gone midnight. Panic would set in as I realised that within only a few hours I was hundreds of pounds down. But that only induced me to try to win it back.’

Within four weeks, Jenny had run up a debt of £5,000, maxing out her overdraft, as well as her credit card.

‘I couldn’t even admit to myself what I’d done, let alone David. When I said I’d been stung by some unforeseen bills, he offered me £2,000 to help out.

‘In the meantime, I moved to a cheaper, two-bed flat, which more than paid off my debt. I knew I’d had a close call, and promised myself my betting days were over.’
