Official Apologizes for Comparing Gambling to Rape
Ranjit Sinha, the leader of the central department for the Investigation of India, has apologized for a comment he made earlier in the week comparing gambling to rape.
Sinha suggested that “unlicensed betting should not be made legal, because similarly to circumstances of rape, it was like saying that because we can’t always stop it, we should make it legal and ‘enjoy’ it.”
"I regret any hurt caused as the same was inadvertent and unintended. I reiterate my deep sense of regard and respect for women and commitment to gender issues," he said in a statement today.
Woman’s rights activists expressed vitriol towards Sinha’s comparison between gambling and rape.
"It is sickening that a man who is in charge of several rape investigations should use such an analogy," said Brinda Karat of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
