Facebook, the social networking behemoth, is considering real money online gambling in the United Kingdom?

Those are the latest rumors.

“We’re always in discussions with companies about lots of different ideas, but we don’t comment on future plans or speculation,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement issued to ZDNet.com late Wednesday.

Currently the company’s Zynga online poker platform is the biggest free-to-play Web card room in the world.  The Zynga games, which include the popular Farmville, enjoy a player base of some 200 million monthly users.

ZDNet.com reported:

Facebook already offers a virtual currency option known as Facebook Credits, which is used extensively in Facebook apps like social games, but the social networking giant is also reportedly interested in supporting the exchange of real money in the online gambling market.

eGamingReview.com took things one step forward, claiming Facebook was looking to license eight companies, two from each vertical, to offer real cash play in the UK.  Gamesys, which has some 1.7 million monthly Facebook users and 888.com are reportedly first in line.

Facebook currently takes a 30 percent cut of all virtual currencies.  It has not offered a date as to when it will begin offering the “real cash” apps, assuming they meet approval.
