You can bet on this year’s Belmont Stakes race online from Arizona, Colorado and Georgia but only at licensed international racebooks such as

Millions of people will be wagering on Saturday’s Belmont Stakes race as American Pharoah looks to become the first horse in nearly 40 years to take the Triple Crown.  Sites like TVG and Twinspires will not accept customers from around a dozen states due to local gambling laws.

It seems odd that Colorado – a state that just legalized Marijuana – would be among those where there are restrictions.

Neither Georgia or South Carolina offer horse racing while two states – Utah and Hawaii – have no gambling at all, and this includes state lotteries.

Prohibited states include the following:

Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands.  Most offshore online books do accept residents of these jurisdictions.

A number of these states either do not allow gambling (i.e. Utah, Hawaii) or do not have horse racing.
