The bookies are getting especially creative with the upcoming London Olympics, offering odds on just about everything under the sun including whether there will be a UFO sighting during the opening ceremony and if the torch bearer trips while attempting to light the flame.
Paul Haven of the Associated Press reports that London bookmakers will be offering odds on almost anything, including all 26 sports at the games. Nearly all the online sportsbooks are offering odds on the London Olympics (see Sportsbook’s odds below).
Ladbrokes, one of the UK’s biggest bookmakers, is among the most creative. They will be offering betting on everything from whether the Olympics will be over budget, that a British athlete will be photographed eating a McDonald's Big Mac, or that the athletes village in Olympic Park will run out of condoms. All total, Ladbrokes expects to offer 11,000 different wagers on the 2012 Olympics. They have already taken a $15,500 bet on Usain Bolt.
With the British betting industry worth an estimated $9 billion a year, the International Olympic Committee has been working with some gambling houses to prevent corruption. Athletes are prevented from betting on the Olympics.
