Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the 2013 FIFA Ballon d'Or Player of the Year Monday.

The Real Madrid forward was the odds-on favorite ahead of Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich.

23 players were initially candidates to win the award but was narrowed down to the three footballers.

France Football introduced the Ballon d'Or in 1956 to honour the European footballer of the year, before it was expanded in 2007 to become a global prize.
