The Dolphins odds to win the 2014 Super Bowl were at 25/1 while the Chiefs Super Bowl odds were at 18/1. Yes these odds (available at AceSportsbook.com) have been slashed dramatically since the start of the new season, and with good reason.
The Kansas City Chiefs open the 2013 regular season with a 3-0 record, already surpassing the total number of wins they had last season. They already played their Week 3 game Thursday night.
Miami comes into this week 2-0 playing their first game at home. That’s right, their first two wins were on the road. They’ll face their toughest foe yet, the Atlanta Falcons.
Kansas City managed to win on the road against Philadelphia. There was much hoopla surrounding this game as the Chiefs new head coach, Andy Reid, returned home after being discharged from the Eagles organization last season. He served 13 years as the Eagles head coach.
The excitement in Kansas City is not only about coach Reid though.
In Thursday’s game, the Chiefs new starting quarterback Alex Smith completed 21-31 for 258 yards on passes 10 yards or fewer downfield. Smith was 1-4 on passes further than 10 yards downfield. Since 2012, Alex Smith has thrown an interception on 1.5% of his pass attempts. Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers are the only quarterbacks with a lower percentage during that span.
We had a few more impressive numbers to ponder after Thursday’s game. Chiefs LB Justin Houston recorded 4.5 sacks versus the Eagles, becoming just the 2nd player in franchise history to record 4.5+ sacks in a single game.
Meanwhile, Miami is enjoying an unexpected 2-0 start to the season. In Week 1 their defense came on strong for a 23-10 win. Last week, the Dolphins Ryan Tannehill was superb with 8-of-9 passing more than 10 yards downfield Sunday, picking up 209 of his 319 passing yards on those throws.
Tannhill continues to mature and shows signs of becoming an elite quarterback on a team that has been without a star in that position since Dan Marino.
Miami's potential road to the Super Bowl could prove easier than the Chiefs. The Dolphins play in a division long dominated by the New England Patriots, who this year have looked sketchy. The Dolphins other division rivals look like nonthreats. Kansas City has Denver and a San Diego team that has played well the first two weeks.
