Betting Preview Brief

Justis Mosqueda of SettingEdge.com explains why he believes the Bengals had such a successful season two years ago:

The Bengals have been best under Lewis when the keys were handed over to great coordinators who were hired from the outside. 2016 was the first year since Lewis started making it to the playoffs that two homegrown coordinators were running the show. The result? Cincinnati went from a 12-4 record, Lewis’ best as a head coach, to a 6-9-1 record, the third-worst mark in his 14-year career.

Not only did they win games, they also had the second best record Against The Spread in the league that year after Minnesota.

And now for why the Bengals will likely win UNDER 8.5 regular season games in 2017:

They need their offensive line to get better while having the biggest loss of talent at the position league-wide. Their front seven needs to improve, which is really only possible if the three mid-round selections of defensive tackle Andrew Billings and defensive ends/linebackers Jordan Willis and Carl Lawson hit. That trio has a combined zero live snaps in NFL regular season games.

Off Season Moves And Impact

It’s not all bad for the Bengals, just there won’t be enough to go beyond the .500 mark in our opinion.

Jim Barnwell of ESPN.com writes:

John Ross, A.J. Green and Tyler Eifert could be a terrifying combination. It wasn't unreasonable for the Bengals to allow Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu to leave last offseason, although it would have probably been better, in hindsight, for the organization to hold onto one of their two drafted-and-developed products. Injuries prevented Green and Eifert from making a simultaneous impact in 2016.

If we don't include the game in which Green tore his hamstring on the opening possession against the Bills, Cincinnati's duo played all of three contests together last season. The Bengals averaged 26 points in those three contests, up a full touchdown from their average of 19 points the rest of the way. Part of that was playing the Browns, but the presence of two terrifying weapons in the passing game opened up passing avenues for Andy Dalton and running lanes for an otherwise frustrating Bengals attack.

Unfortunately for Cincinnati, their offensive line is “in shambles” according to Barnwell.  Andy Dalton will not have the protection he requires.

Bengals 2017: What to Bet

The total is set at 8.5 and we cannot even see this Bengals squad getting above the .500 mark, especially when we believe Cleveland will improve and Baltimore will likely be a .500 or slightly better team in this division.  Pittsburgh should rock it!  Bengals UNDER 8.5 even at -130.
