Host country Chile meets surprise semifinalists Peru in the Copa América.

Chile has advanced to the semifinals on its home soil, but the country’s success has not been without controversy. In its 1-0 quarterfinal win over Uruguay, defender Gonzalo Jara provoked Edinson Cavani into a red card, and although the Chilean’s actions went unseen by the referee, he was handed a three-match suspension by CONMEBOL, South American soccer’s governing body. Jara, who had started every match thus far in the tournament, will likely be replaced by José Rojas. Jorge Valdivia, who has three assists in his past two games, will once again look to be the creative spark in Chile’s midfield.

Peru will have its hands full with Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal, undeniably the most talented players to feature in this match, and keeping this dangerous duo off the scoreboard will be essential for the underdogs. Peru does, however, have some firepower of its own, and Paolo Guerrero enters this matchup fresh off of a hat-trick performance against Bolivia in a 3-1 victory. This impressive performance is good for Peru’s psyche, but manager Ricardo Gareca surely knows that his team will be facing a much more difficult opponent on Monday.

Peru’s best players are in the attack, so its best option will be to push for goals as opposed to sitting back and hoping for a late winner, a strategy many other underdogs employ; for this reason, expect over 2.5 goals to be scored. Ultimately, Chile’s talent will triumph in an entertaining affair that could end by a score of 3-1.
