Carolina Panthers starting quarterback Cam Newton was in fair condition following a serious car accident Tuesday afternoon, prompting oddsmakers to pull the Bucs-Panthers Sunday game off the board. Cam was not expected to play this Sunday. In his place will be Derek Anderson. The line was now Carolina -3.
"We are closely monitoring the situation of a car wreck involving Cam Newton," the Panthers said in a statement. "We will have more information at an appropriate time."
Newton was said to be smiling and did not want to be taken to the hospital even though the truck he was driving in reportedly got crushed. He was being kept in the hospital overnight as a precaution.
"Further testing revealed that Cam Newton has two transverse process fractures in his lower back and no further internal injuries," the Panthers said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.
He was released from the hospital Wednesday morning but was sore in his lower back.
The incident occurred on the Church Street bridge over I-277 in Charlotte, North Carolina about 12:30 p.m.
The Panthers were still in contention to win the NFC South despite a 4-8 record. They dismantled New Orleans at home over the past weekend while Atlanta lost in Green Bay Monday night. Carolina is just one game behind New Orleans and Atlanta.
The accident was ruled not to be Newton's fault.
