The Cleveland Browns were listed with 75-1 odds following the signing of favored Draft prospect Johnny Manziel.
Manziel was selected with the No. 22 overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night after being a favorite to get chosen within the first five.
Terry Pluto of the Plains Dealer expressed a number of concerns over Manziel the morning after the Draft.
Only two quarterbacks under 6 feet tall – Drew Brees and Russell Wilson – have won a Super Bowl. Manziel is under 6 feet.
Then there’s this:
Manziel must change his game to succeed in the NFL. This is not to outfit him in cement sneakers and chain him to the pocket. But Manziel runs around too much, takes too many chances. He carried the ball 343 times in his two years at Texas A&M. That is more than Robert Griffin III did in his two years at Baylor (328). It is true that Manziel carried the ball less (143 times) compared to RG3 (179) in their final college season. Bottom line: They both ran it far too much. And after 120 carries as a rookie with Washington in 2012, RG3 sustained a major knee injury. He was not nearly as productive in 2013.
Pluto also expressed concerns over Manziel’s ability to handle defensive pressure and the idea that the Browns front office will want to throw him right into the game before he’s truly ready.
There will be a lot of adjustments for Manziel, and they will have to be made fast. That's because no matter how the Browns say they want to start veteran Brian Hoyer, there will be pressure to use Manziel the moment Hoyer struggles. And Manziel will feel pressure to make big and exciting plays in the preseason to prove he should start.
