The Independence Bowl began in 1976 with teams from the Pac-12, Conference USA (C-USA), or the American Athletic Conference (The American).  The payout is $2.2 million.

The Ragin' Cajuns disappointing season got them to 6-6 Straight Up and 7-5 Against The Spread.

Houston owns a somewhat more respectable 7-5 record Straight Up but is only 4-8 Against The Spread.

Who Do the Line Trends Favor?

One might anticipate an underlay here being that Houston is favored to win and its record Against The Spread needs to better match up with its record straight up.

Instead we have a nearly 5-point overlay.  Gambling911.com gets a number of Cougars 2.29 whereas the line is coming in at -6.5 to -7.  That represents a 4 to 4.5 overlay.

Overlays of 5 or greater have gone 15-2 in favor of the dog this season.  We're not quite there with this one.

6.5 to 7 point lines with overlays are 4-4 Against The Spread.  By comparison, underlays are 5-0.

Hot Independence Bowl Betting Trends

Ragin' Cajuns are 6-0 Against The Spread in their last 6 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.

Ragin' Cajuns are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game.

Cougars are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games in December.

Important to Know Before Placing a Bet

The Ragin' Cajuns (6-6) will make their fifth consecutive bowl appearance while the Cougars (7-5) are in a bowl for the third consecutive season.

Louisiana's power rating does not reflect key departures such as defensive end Andre Jones.  Whether he accounts for the 4 to 4.5 point overlay for Houston is unlikely.

"John (Stephens), Pete (LeBlanc), Errol (Rogers Jr.), Jake Bernard, those guys need to step up a little bit and play their best game," Louisiana coach Michael Desormeaux told reporters recently. "Then you add (wide receiver) Lance (Legendre), who's played more and more as the season has gone on, but now it's his time to go out there and do it."

The Cougars remain mostly intact and its a team that possesses one of the most potent offenses, led by QB Clayton Tune.  He has thrown for 3,845 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

His top target is Nathaniel Dell, who leads the team with 103 catches for 1,354 yards and 15 touchdowns.
