Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl Spread: Louisville vs. Southern Mississippi

The Beef ‘O” Brady’s Bowl spread for Louisville vs. Southern Mississippi had Louisville as a -2.5 favorite at SBG Global going into game time Tuesday, 8:00 pm Eastern – ESPN.  The total on this game was 57.

Tuesday night in St. Petersburg, Florida it will be Louisville and Southern Mississippi meeting in the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl.  These two teams used to be conference rivals so they are well acquainted.  It is a matchup of two teams that win in opposite ways as Louisville wins with defense while Southern Miss wins with offense.

Louisville was much improved this college football season under first-year head coach Charlie Strong.  The Cardinals were 12th in the country on defense allowing just 304.7 yards per game.  Louisville finished just 6-6 on the season but they are getting a lot of respect from the oddsmakers in this game as they are favored against a Southern Miss team that finished 8-4.  The Golden Eagles were 15th in the country averaging 37.6 points per game.  The problem for Southern Miss is a defense that allowed opponents to score 40 points or more a total of five times this season.

Louisville was not that great on offense this season and quarterback play was part of the problem.  Senior Justin Burke is expected to start the bowl game but Adam Froman may be available.  He threw for 1,633 yards and 11 TDs in eight games but then got hurt.  Last year he threw for 248 yards in a 25-23 Louisville win against Southern Mississippi. Louisville can run the ball though as they have Bilal Powell who was second in the Big East with 1,330 yards.

Louisville has won the last four games against Southern Miss although the Golden Eagles still lead the all-time series 18-9-1.  Southern Miss will be playing in their ninth straight bowl game and their 21st overall. They are 9-11 in their previous games. Louisville will be playing in its 15th bowl game in their history. Here are more football betting stats for Tuesday’s game. The Cardinals are 12-1 ATS in their last 13 vs. Conference USA. The Cardinals are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite. The Cardinals are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games in December. The Cardinals are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 bowl games. The Golden Eagles are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. Looking at the total, the Over is 7-1 in the Golden Eagles last 8 games overall.
