South Carolina Senate Race Gets Hotter With David Wilkins Odds Cutting Into Pamela Evette Initial -500 Price

South Carolina announced a special election following the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham. Rep. Nancy Mace has stated she does not intend to enter the race.

Mace spoke to CNN and CBS Sunday evening about her plans.

During a CBS News interview, she expressed that South Carolina needs time to mourn and that Republicans cannot afford to lose her vote with the current thin majority in the House of Representatives. She instead suggested that the state governor appoint himself to hold the seat until the August 11 special election.   She echoed a similar sentiment while appearing on CNN.   However, Mace closed the interview on CNN by implying she would not completely shut the door to jumping in.

None of that might matter as her odds moved from 8-1 to 16-1.

Pamela Evette odds, meanwhile, have gotten much longer after initially coming in at -500. She's now down to -160.

David Wilkins pays $325 for every $100 bet.   That is an interesting development as Wilkins was not listed among the odds found at BetOnline Sunday.

Wilkins served as speaker of the South Carolina House for 11 years and presently chairs the public policy and international law practice department of a South Carolina law firm.  He was also a former ambassador.

Wilkins recruited Graham to run for the South Carolina state legislature. It was the beginning of a solid lifelong relationship.

"You know, I'd ask him the question, why do you want to serve? And his response to me, I clearly remember, is 'I want to make a difference. I want to go down and make a difference.' And so I think his whole purpose was to really don't go down and just bide your time, go down and really make a difference, have an impact," the 77-year-old says.

That impact is one that Wilkins will always remember.

"He's the same guy I knew I met in 1992. Very humble, he joked a lot. He made fun of himself a lot. He had a great sense of humor. He took his position very seriously, but he never took himself too seriously," Wilkins says.

Wilkins has not declared any intention to run for the Senate seat held by Graham, at least not publicly.
