Mavs Must Win Scenario as They Came Into Game Short-Handed

(April 7, 2023) - All-Star guard Kyrie Irving and four key Dallas Mavericks role players sat out Friday night's home game against the Chicago Bulls.  The game was a "must win" for the 38-42 Mavs, who were an -8 point favorite in this game.  The line had been as large as -11 overnight.  If anything though, based on recent trends and the injuries, this was like taking candy from a baby for the Bulls to actually win outright let alone cover the spread.  That's exactly what happened in the end as Chicago walked away with the 115-112 win.  Surprised it was actually that close.

In addition to Irving (right foot injury), shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr. (left ankle soreness) will also sit this one out as will small forward Josh Green (rest), and power forward/centers Maxi Kleber (right hamstring injury recovery) as well as Christian Wood (rest).

In order for the Mavs to have made the playoffs, they not only needed to win Friday night and again on Sunday versus the San Antonio Spurs, the Oklahoma City Thunder would have had to lose at home Sunday to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Recent trends suggested Dallas could be in some trouble Friday night even if they were healthy.

Chicago is 5-1 straight up in the last six meetings versus Dallas.
