Vital Vegas broke the story on Twitter Wednesday evening.

"Crazy twist to the NYC shooter story, not reported elsewhere: Source says three days before the shooting, Shane Tamura was backed off for card counting at Westgate."

Card counting is a blackjack strategy where players keep track of the ratio of high-value cards (like 10s, jacks, queens, kings, and aces) to low-value cards remaining in the deck or shoe. By knowing the approximate composition of the remaining cards, players can adjust their bets and playing decisions to gain a statistical advantage over the casino.

"Backed off", as explained by Vital Vegas, simply means that if a casino suspects an individual of having an edge, they can tell that person to leave the establishment.  That's what the Westgate apparently did.

NYC shooting today: Off-duty New York City officer among 4 killed in 345 Park Ave shooting in Midtown, Manhattan, officials say - ABC7 Los Angeles

The gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, had driven to New York City from his residence in Las Vegas.

Tamura, 27, sprayed the skyscraper’s lobby with bullets killing three people, then shot another person in a 33rd-floor office on Monday before he killed himself, authorities said. Among the dead were a police officer, a security guard and two people who worked at companies in the building. An NFL employee was badly wounded but survived.

The attacker’s grievances with the NFL emerged as police worked to piece together his background and motivations, and as loved ones began to mourn the dead.
