Illinois vs. Nebraska Betting Preview

Dylan Raiola passed for 247 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 23 Nebraska continued its best start since 2016 with a 34-3 win over Northern Iowa on Saturday night.

As a result, Nebraska inched up to No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and to the same spot in the Associated Press Top 25. Nebraska was No. 24 in the Coaches Poll and No. 23 in the AP poll heading into Week Three.

“I refer to this as the preseason. We’re learning how to win,” said Nebraska coach Matt Rhule, whose team lost four games by three points and another in overtime last season. “The narrative of losing close games comes from when you get a lead and not trying to put the game away. We want to score, get a lead if we can, play defense and run the football. Then people say we’re boring in the fourth quarter.”

Raiola threw for 209 yards in the first half and completed 13 of his first 14 passes, including 11 in a row. He finished 17 of 23 and gave way to Heinrich Haarberg midway through the fourth quarter.

Illinois will come into this game undefeated and also cracks the Top 25 rankings after defeating the Central Michigan Chippewas 30-9 on Saturday.  This marks the first time since November 25, 2022 that the Fighting Illini have ranked in the AP Top 25.

Head coach Bret Bielema's 9-4 record in nonconference games is the best by an Illini head coach through 13 games since Robert Zuppke started 10-3 against non-Big Ten opponents from 1913-18.

“I know the outside world thinks we're 3-0 but we're going to try to go 1-0 every week and focus on the task at hand to get that done,” Bielema said on Saturday after the win over Central Michigan.

Nebraska sits at No. 26 on the Sagarin Ratings with Illinois No. 51.

Sagarin gives us a number of 7.73 while the actual line came in early at Illinois +9.5 dropping to +7.5, initially an overlay to a more accurate number.

Our model suggests a very slight edge for Illiois when looking at movement above the 7 and an accurate line.  This is not the case when looking at the movement from 10 downward and an overlay early.
