Just two days prior to the race we had our first scratch(es). Practical Move got pulled due to a high fever. Lord Miles got pulled as a result of his links to trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr., who has now been suspended indefinitely by Churchill Downs. Two of Joseph's horses passed away in recent days.
The Contenders
Tapit Triice - At 5-1 odds, the value is quite good. Tapit Twice is coming off four straight wins. Now consider that a record ten winners have come out of the No. 5 spot where this horse is starting from and that 5-1 price looks especially enticing.
Mage - He'll start from the number 8 post position, which has brought us nine winners. He's got three career starts, winning two and finishing second in another.
The Trainers
Todd Pletcher will be racing Forte and Tapit Trice, the favorite and horse with the second shortest odds, respectively. He has two Derby wins under his belt thus far: Super Saver (2010) and Always Dreaming (2017).
Brad Cox has has four horses in this year's Derby. It was just two years ago Cox won two of the three Triple Crown races with two horses.
The Jockeys
John Velazquez is seeking his fourth Derby win with Reincarnate (50-1 odds).
Flavien Pratt won the 2019 Kentucky Derby with Country House. He's riding Angel of Empire.
Cox has a former Derby winner in charge of longshot Jace's Road. Geroux won the Derby in 2021 aboard Mandaloun.
