  • The state of California does not regulate sports betting at this time

  • There are so many solid established mobile sportsbooks that do take bets from those in California

  • Special interests and in-fighting among tribes and card rooms have mostly prevented online gambling from taking hold in the world's seventh largest economy

  • The Bruins men's basketball team made it into the 2023 Sweet 16 while the football team promised a payout of $12,500 on a $100 bet to win the 2023-24 Championship before falling to Gonzaga 79-76

Your UCLA Bruins were red hot and made it into the 2023 Sweet 16, but Caliornia is yet to regulate sports betting.  That might not be a bad thing.  There are so many great online sportsbooks, many of which have been in business for close to 25 years or longer now that are not restricted in what they can offer.

Why Can't I Bet With DraftKings, FanDuel From California?

DraftKings and FanDuel adhere to stringent regulation policies.  In other words, these companies only operate within a regulated framework in states that explicitly license sportsbooks, for which California is not one.

Sites like BetOnline and others operate with a license granted by popular international gambling hubs that do not prohibit accepting customers from the US.

In California, it's all about control and special interests.

Two voter referendums appearing on the November 2022 ballot failed miserably.

Props 26 and 27 each sought to have sports gambling legalized in California.

Prop 26 would have allowed for in-person betting only and was supported by a majority of the tribes.

Prop 27 was being pushed by outside companies like DraftKings and FanDuel to allow mobile sports betting statewide.  A few tribes also supported Prop 27 but they were in the minority.

There is also in-fighting between some of the tribes and California's card rooms.

Translation: There is a civil war in the world's seventh largest economy that has prevented the legalization of online gambling, including poker and sports wagering, for the better part of a decade.

Bruins Fall to Gonzaga in Sweet 16

Injuries were a concern for the Bruins as they came into their Sweet 16 game against Gonzaga as a -2 favorite.

UCLA’s Adem Bona aggravated his shoulder injury in the second half against Northwestern last weekend but quickly returned.  It was David Singleton's rolling ankle with 20 seconds left that has the team most concerned ahead of this matchup.

“Both great guys, that’s all I gotta say on that,” Bruins coach Mick Cronin said. “We’ll see. Everybody’s day-to-day, including me — and you.”

The Bruins had gone 18-2 against Pac-12 opponents, with a 13-3 record in non-conference play.

Jaime Jaquez Jr. was averaging 17.5 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals for the Bruins. Tyger Campbell is averaging 15.9 points, 5.3 assists and 1.7 steals over the past 10 games for UCLA.

The Bruins would go on to lose to Gonzaga but came close to advancing with a final score of Zags 79-76.

There will be five conference road trips.  Playing at Utah is not expected to be a cake walk.  This will be the toughest early season road test for UCLA.  The Utes will be dangerous as they return Cameron Rising along with a young backfield.

No Oregon and no Washington helps though.

Iowa State: Are They The Underdogs To Look For In March Madness?

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
