No. 12 seed Oregon State upset the fourth-seeded Oklahoma State Cowboys at Hinkle Fieldhouse 80-70 on Sunday night to advance to the Sweet 16 in the Midwest Regional of the NCAA tournament.

Senior guard Ethan Thompson led the Beavers with 26 points on 5-of-11 shooting and seven rebounds.  Maurice Calloo scored 15 points.

The Beavers scored 44 points in the first half, the most allowed by Oklahoma State in a first half this season.

"This team had some big goals going into the season," Thompson said after the game. "One of them was winning a Pac-12 tournament championship -- a Pac-12 regular-season championship, as well, of course, but we didn't do that. We got the tournament championship. Ultimate goal is to win the NCAA championship."

Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle has a deep connection to his opponent in the Sweet 16, Loyola-Chicago.  He dad was dean of students at Loyola Chicago.

"I grew up on their campus," Tinkle explained.

The Oregon Ducks made it into the second round by way of an uncontested game as VCU had to back out due to Covid-19 positives.

The Ducks answered any question about potentially playing rusty with a 95-80 upset over Iowa.

"I don't think we've ever scored 95 points," said coach Dana Altman after the game. "The shots were falling, the energy was going, and again, 25 assists on 38 baskets is a very good ratio. So our guys were really making plays for each other, and we got a lot of good looks because the ball was moving."
