The line on this First Four March Madness 2018 game was coming in at Tigers -5.5.
Texas Southern played the likes of power house teams Ohio State, Syracuse, Kansa, Gonzaga, TCU and Clemson, culminating in a 0-13 record. That’ won’t get them far in the Tournament.
While Texas Southern can be vulnerable on defense, they do have one of the best free throw percentages in the nation.
NC Central, meanwhile, is back in the tournament for the third time in five seasons.
NC Central is far and away the lowest-power-rated team in the tournament. The Eagles finished only 9-7 in the MEAC, but got hot at the right time with four wins in five days.
Their strength comes from the Eagles bench. Forty-one percent of the Eagles scoring comes from its bench, one of the highest figures in the country. Very few teams possess the rotation depth of NC Central, which makes it challenging for opponents to prepare for matchups.
The Eagles, however, turn the ball over on nearly 21 percent of their possessions. That's going to cost them dearly.
Because Texas Southern enters this game with a 15-19 record, we believe the -5.5 line to be too high and anticipate North Carolina Central can at least cover the spread here. The Power Ratings only indicate a line of no more than -3.5 rounded upwards.
