Michigan State’s Kalin Lucas Out: Northern Iowa +1 Dog

The Michigan State Spartans could lose guard Kalin Lucas for five months due to a left Achilles heel injury and now the public favorite, Northern Iowa, comes in as a +1 underdog at Sportsbetting.com (see website here).  Northern Iowa was getting 75 percent of the action at that number.

The injury news is most unwelcome given that Lucas was the leading scorer in the regular season (14.8 ppg) and that Michigan State has a Sweet 16 matchup vs. the upstart Northern Iowa Panthers on Friday.

Lucas either has a torn or sprained Achilles heel according to reports and will have an MRI later on Monday to determine the extent of the injury; it doesn't look good.

MSU head coach Tom Izzo says that the team is almost certain - 90 percent certain in fact - that Lucas has a long-term injury given the way the guard sustained the injury in the team's second-round win over Maryland last Sunday.

"The way he heard it pop, the way he can't walk, the way he said he felt he was kicked, those are all things that doctors say are signs of a torn Achilles," Izzo told the Detroit Free Press.

Even if the MRI reveals a sprain, Lucas would miss Friday's matchup against Northern Iowa the Free Press reported.
