Well the summer of Durant is over early.   After all the courting and lovefests out there for the superstar free agent from Oklahoma City, the Golden State Warriors, who won 73 regular season games last year setting a NBA record, only to lose out to LeBron James and the Cavs have fully tightened their arsenal of weapons adding to the star power of MVP Stephen Curry, Thompson, Green, and a host of others off the bench as all world Durant signs on for two years at roughly 54 million dollars, with an opt out after a year. WOW. (Tony George of TonyGeorgeSports.com reporting for Gambling911.com)

Vegas Reaction

The Thunder, before Durant’s decision had a good draft and some free agent moves that I felt had them in a prime position to make another huge run next year behind the excellent coaching of Billy Donovan, whose effort as a newly appointed head coach last year went without a lot of fanfare, but he did an excellent job.

The Thunder went from 7/1 on the futures in Las Vegas to win the NBA Championship, down to 30/1 and higher than that in a few places with the news on July 4th that Durant was gone.

Conversely the Warriors were already odds on favorites to win the title in 2017, and Vegas oddsmakers had them at 7/4 odds to win it all, and now the shift is at 3/2 to win it all in 2017, and really who could argue it on the surface.  Some books Monday had them at -150 on the moneyline to win the Western Conference title.

Now Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is going have to have to manage various ego’s and personalities in 2017 with a star studded team, and chemistry has to develop.  Phil Jackson was able to do it with numerous star studded teams both in LA and Chicago, however it is not an easy task to manage and coach a team like that.  While Golden State was shocked in the NBA Finals, losing 3 straight for the first time all season to lose out to Cavs in the title game, it should be noted that nothing comes easy in the NBA, especially down the stretch and the Cavs and a few others from the East will be no slouches come playoff time again, and some contenders from West will line up to knock off this “Super Team” and no doubt the Warriors will be the team that everyone wants to beat in 2017, and they will face the “A” game of every team they play all season long.  Time will tell.
