This is Harvard’s first appearance in the NCAA Basketball Tournament since 1946 and only the school’s second appearance in its history.

They earned the number 12 seed going up against the number 5 seed.

"Obviously a big day for us," said Hartford head coach Tommy Amaker. "It's an incredibly exciting day and an incredibly exciting moment. It was so neat to see these guys jump for joy when our name was brought up in the broadcast in one of the brackets. We’re thrilled to represent our conference, our university and, certainly, our program, and we’ll do the best we can."

In regard to the seeding he added:  "I don’t get wrapped up in that and try to figure that out," he said. "These guys are familiar with figuring out the information on Bracketology with [Joe] Lunardi; our staff does that at times. But we were just excited to have our name called. And Vanderbilt, with what they’ve done today, beating Kentucky in the finals of the SEC tournament, obviously we know how tremendous of a ball club they have and have been."

Harvard (26-4, 12-2 Ivy) earned its second consecutive Ivy League crown.

Vanderbilt (23-10) comes into the tournament making headlines after it upset No. 1 overall seed Kentucky on Sunday in the SEC tournament final. The Commodores are making their third straight NCAA tournament appearance and fifth in the last six years; they have lost three straight first-round games.

“We were just excited to hear our name called,” said Harvard coach Tommy Amaker, who played in the tournament when he was at Duke. “We know this great tournament is going to be as sensational as it’s always been, with a number of great games that we hope to be a part of.”
