The Villanova Wildcats are the overwhelming favorite to capture this tournament. Villanova trailed St. John’s by double figures this past Saturday in the regular season finale. The Wildcats eventually took a 26-point lead and won the game going away. Villanova busted off a 33-8 run at one point to take complete command of a game in which it started terribly. That’s how much firepower Villanova has, how much shooting ability the Wildcats have been able to collect throughout a deep and talented backcourt. The Wildcats are led by Darrun Hilliard, who hits almost 44 percent of all his field goal attempts while taking a noticeable amount of three-point shots. That Hilliard can be as consistent as he is while trying to make a lot of long-distance attempts shows how good a shooter he is. He stands out as the best of Villanova’s perimeter players. However, if he is taken away by defenses that naturally focus on him, the Wildcats can attack with Ryan Arcidiacono and Dylan Ennis as well. They both average at least 3.5 assists per game and are so good at making the extra pass to put a teammate in position to get a high-quality look at the basket. Villanova won this league by four games over two teams that tied for second place. There really is no second choice here.

Sleepers/Longshots

There’s one longshot to keep an eye on, and that’s St. John’s. Remember that this tournament is held in Madison Square Garden – that’s the Red Storm’s home court. If any team can ride a wave of emotion to the title, this is the one. The other team to watch, as a kind of sleeper, is Butler. Everyone knows the Bulldogs are good, but most people probably wouldn’t bet on them to beat Xavier, Georgetown, and Villanova on consecutive days. The Bulldogs might be better than we all think.
