The new baseball season is finally here.
In our opinion, betting on MLB games is more fun than practically any other sport out there. Hundreds of handicapping sites exist with many offering in depth analyses as well as free baseball picks.
None of this matters if you place a bet on a game only to find out it's been abruptly cancelled or postponed due to weather. Even worse is betting on the over in a particular game, having the score be 10-2 already by the 4th inning, then suddenly weather forces a suspension.
Below, Gambling911.com takes a look at some of the possible outcomes when a game is impacted by weather.
Have No Fear When These Teams Are Playing at Home
Eight Major League Baseball teams play under a dome or retractable roof.
These include the Astros, Rangers, Diamondbacks, Brewers, Mariners, Blue Jays, Marlins.
The Rays are back playing at the league's only fully domed stadium, Tropicana Field, after being displaced last season due to damage caused by Hurricane Milton.
Unless weather conditions are expected to be so bad that officials believe it would be too dangerous for folks traveling to the ball game, gamblers typically do not need to worry about storms impacting play for these teams when playing at home.
Most Sportsbooks - Not All - Follow These Rules
If the game is postponed before it begins and is not played within 48 hours of the original start time, all bets are voided, and your stake is refunded.
Gambling911.com explored all the big names in U.S. regulated sports betting to determine that this rule is NOT universally accepted.
Because an individual sportsbook could change its rules tomorrow, we won't mention any by name but these are some examples of the variations:
- Book A states that if a game is postponed or canceled before its due start time, all bets are no action. It separately uses a 48-hour concept for a game that is already suspended after starting, but not for a pregame postponement.
- Book B says the game must be played on the same scheduled day for bets to have action. If it is postponed and not played that same day, bets are void.
- Book C uses a 24-hour postponement rule in its house rules, not 48 hours, for postponed events generally.
Impacts on Types of Bets
Again, we need to stress that rules may vary between sites but these are the generally accepted outcomes:
- Single Bets: These are voided if the game isn't completed within the 48-hour window, and your stake is returned.
- Parlay Bets: If one leg of your parlay is voided due to a postponed game, that leg is removed, and the parlay continues with the remaining selections. The odds and potential payout are adjusted accordingly.
- Player Props: These require all listed players to be active. If a player doesn't participate, the bet is voided.

Totals
House rules matter a great deal when it comes to totals.
In general, i the game goes at least 9 innings (or 8.5 if the home team is winning), the total bet is counted and will be graded accordingly based on the score at the time of suspension.
Should the game be called off prior to 8.5 innings (or 9 full innings if the visiting team is ahead), the total bet is voided at most books. It will therefore be marked as "no action" and refunded in most cases.
In the event of a game suspension that resumes the next day (or within 24 hours), the game is deemed as "unofficial" as it applies to totals bets. Therefore, they are voided. However, some books do treat suspensions when resumed the next day differently in regard to totals so it is important to check individual sportsbook rules.
There are a handful of U.S. regulated books that are more likely to void totals bets if the game is not completed or does not resume within a very specific time frame.
Here are some real life examples:
- Book A - Over bets can win if already exceeded.
- Book B - Honors already decided Overs but voids undecided bets.
- Book C - Voids bets regardless of where the total lands at time of suspension if game is not completed that day or evening.
Player Performance Prop Bets
Most U.S. sportsbooks treat player props as “must complete” bets whereby the game must be officially completed OR resumed within the allowed window (per a sports book's specified time frame), otherwise bets are voided.
These Home Teams Have Been Most Impacted By Weather Over the Years
Gambling911.com highly recommends checking the weather forecast whenever these teams are playing at home:
- New York Yankees
- New York Mets
- Boston Red Sox
- Philadelphia Phillies
April and May months include both the cold and rain while summer thunderstorms present a problem.
- Cleveland Guardians
- Chicago Cubs
- Chicago White Sox
- Detroit Tigers
Cold, rain and even snow present a risk early. Thunderstorms have even presented themselves very early in the 2026 season in the Chicago area.
- Atlanta Braves
- Washington Nationals
- Baltimore Orioles
There aren't as many rain-outs, per se, but these games are frequently impacted by thunderstorm delays.
