Wednesday, 7:05 pm Eastern – ESPN

The Philadelphia Phillies host the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday in the second baseball game of a three-game series.  The Phillies are putting the heat on the Braves in the National League East while the Giants are trying to stay close to the Padres in the West.  The Giants really need to play well this week on a tough road trip that has them going to St. Louis for the weekend.

SBG Global current line: Giants PK, Total 8.5 Over - 120

The Giants will be sending Matt Cain to the mound on Wednesday.  He is just 9-9 on the
MLB oddsseason even though he has a good ERA of 3.11.  He pitched six innings last time out against the Cubs and got a no-decision.  He is 1-1 in his last three starts with a 2.89 ERA. The concern for the Giants in this game is that Cain has really struggled in his career against the Phillies going 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA.

The Phillies send Joe Blanton on Wednesday. He is 4-6 on the season with a 5.69 ERA.  Blanton can’t seem to get out of the first inning of games without putting the Phillies in a huge hole.  He gave up three runs in the first inning last time out against the Dodgers. His ERA in the first inning this season is 8.53. He has not pitched that well against the Giants in his career as he has a 1-3 record and a 5.08 ERA.

The Giants have done okay vs. right-handed pitching of late as they are 17-8 in their last 25 games vs. a right-handed starter.  They have not been very good on the road though as they are just 1-4 in their last 5 road baseball games. And San Francisco has struggled in Cain’s starts on the road as they are 1-5 in his last 6 road starts. The Giants are 4-12 in the last 16 meetings in Philadelphia.

The Phillies have also excelled vs. right-handed pitching as they are 11-3 in their last 14 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Phillies are 20-6 in their last 26 home games.   The Phillies are 6-0 in Blanton’s last 6 home starts.

Looking at the total, the Under is 4-1 in the Giants last 5 road games. The Under is 7-2 in Cain’s last 9 road starts. The Under is 4-1 in the Phillies last 5 overall. The Over is 7-0-1 in Blanton’s last 8 home starts. The Over is 19-6-2 in Blanton’s last 27 starts overall.
