Preview

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Sean Newcomb (2019: 6-3, 3.16 ERA) vs. Mets RH Rick Porcello (2019: 14-12, 5.52)

Newcomb returns to Atlanta’s starting rotation after making 51 of his 55 appearances last season out of the bullpen, pitching to a 3.04 ERA as a reliever. The 27-year-old walked 10 in 15 innings in his four starts in 2019 but displayed much better control in relief, walking 19 while striking out 57 in 53 1/3 innings. Newcomb, who made 49 starts for the Braves across 2017-18, has posted a 2.75 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 36 innings across seven career starts versus the Mets.

Porcello makes his 344th career appearance but his first in the National League, after spending the first 11 years of his career in the American League. The 31-year-old made 32 starts for Boston in 2019, and while he pitched to a 3.10 ERA across an eight-start stretch from mid-April to late-May, he posted a 6.04 ERA with a .291 opponents batting average in his final 22 starts. Porcello is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four career starts against Atlanta - the most recent a five-inning, one-run, two-hit performance for Boston on Sept. 4, 2018.
