History tells us the best post positions are 5 through 10.  Trainers dread the number one post position even though there have been eight winners from there, however, none since 1968, and before that 1963. SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE

By contrast, four horses have won from the number 5 post position since 2002.  Audible was starting there at 8-1 odds.

Secretariat won from the 10 spot back in 1973 and went on to win the Triple Crown.  Six horses have been victorious from this spot since 1980. My Boy Billy starts from there at 30-1 odds.

The eight spot has yielded eight winners.  Lone Sailor was starting from here at long 50-1 odds.

Justify, the favorite, has a very favorable starting position at 7, which has given us six winners over the years.

With the Kentucky Derby post positions, it is often more prudent to look at spots that have yielded fewer than two winners in the Derby history, keeping in mind that some of these spots did not always exist.

17 has for some time and is yet to claim a winner.  Poor Solomini at 30-1 odds will start from here.

19 and 20 only have one win apiece.  Noble Indy and Combatant, both with long odds, start from these two spots.
