Which Are The Best Post Positions in the Kentucky Derby: Most Wins

Nowhere than with the Kentucky Derby are post position draws more critical it seems and there are some that produce more winners than others.  Find all the latest odds and promos for this weekend's Kentucky Derby here. (max bonus $2500)

One of the main reasons for the focus on post position draws with a Kentucky Derby is the jostling for position with such a large field of entries.  This year, there will be 18 as opposed to 20.  That's still a lot.

Tiz The Law comes into the weekend as the biggest favorite in 32 years but starts from a position that has failed to yield any winners.  We can look at this as the number 17 "being due" or as Tiz The Law "being done".  Tiz The Law won the Belmont Stakes with a field of just ten horses.

Post position Horse Morning line odds
1 Finnick The Fierce 50-1
2 Max Player 30-1
3 Enforceable 30-1
4 Storm The Court 50-1
5 Major Fed 50-1
6 King Guillermo 20-1
7 Money Moves 30-1
8 South Bend 50-1
9 Mr. Big News 50-1
10 Thousand Words 15-1
11 Necker Island 50-1
12 Sole Volante 30-1
13 Attachment Rate 50-1
14 Winning Impression 50-1
15 NY Traffic 20-1
16 Honor A.P. 5-1
17 Tiz The Law 3-5
18 Authentic 8-1

The best post position, in terms of sheer number of wins, would be number 5.  Major Fed pays out 50-1 odds from that position.

While the number one post position has produced 8 winners, this starting point is generally seen today as the least favorable due to the number of entries and being on the far outside.

Post positions 7, 8 and 10 are among the most favorable.
