Virginia is coming off back-to-back wins with their most recent coming in a 60-54 victory over Notre Dame.

“I think that we are never going to apologize for a win, no matter what it looks like,” said Virginia guard Kyle Guy after their most recent win over the Irish.

Virginia is -5 in this game over Virginia Tech.

Hokies Looking for More

Virginia Tech went on the road for a 70-64 victory at Pittsburgh. The Hokies were led by junior Kerry Blackshear Jr. with 29 points and 9 rebounds. Blackshear shot 8-of-9 from the field, 3-3 from beyond the arc and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. The redshirt forward has scored in double figures in five games in a row, with 68.4 percent shooting in the past two games.

With both of those games out of the way, the second matchup of the winter between the Cavaliers (22-2, 10-2 ACC) and Hokies (20-5), 9-4) is set. Each team is contending near the top of the standings, as Virginia currently shares second place and Virginia Tech in a fourth-place tie. Virginia took the last matchup over Virginia Tech back on Jan. 15 when the Cavaliers won 81-59. At that time both teams were in the Top 10. Since that game, Virginia Tech has played some stingy defense and use what’s often referred to as a matchup zone. The Cavaliers ability to move the ball is the key in finding openings in Buzz Williams defense.

Virginia Tech’s leading scorer is Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who averages 16.9 points a night. Justin Robinson is second on the team with 14.4 points, but the Hokies have been without him over the past five games due to injury. That has created more playing time for Jonathan Kabongo, who didn’t play in the first meeting with Virginia. Lately the production of Blackshear has been carrying this team as he leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game to go along with his 14 points per game.

“We have to play through him, “said Coach Williams. “… He’s our best passer. He’s our best playmaker, and he has the highest basketball IQ on our team.”

Cavaliers Among the Elite

“When you don’t shoot the ball particularly well, that challenges you when people are packing in a zone,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said. “You want to be aggressive and make the right play.”

Guy (15.1 ppg) and De’Andre Hunter (15 ppg) lead the Cavaliers in scoring. Both guards have reached the 20-point mark in back-to-back games for Virginia. Hunter, a redshirt sophomore, registered his third career double-double as he also collected 10 rebounds in the Notre Dame game.

“I just wanted to be more aggressive,” Hunter said. “I felt like I was floating a little bit and I just got in the right spots and my teammates gave me the ball.”

Cavaliers Top Hokies

Virginia is 6-2 against nationally ranked teams this season, with both losses against Duke. They are 92-56 all-time vs. Virginia Tech, including a 21-30 mark in Blacksburg. The Cavaliers are 5-2 in their last seven visits. Look for this to be a great game, but in the end, we are going to bet on the Cavaliers to win and cover.
