The Egg Bowl is the name given to the Mississippi State–Ole Miss football rivalry that has been played since 1901. Beginning in 1927, the winner was awarded the "Golden Egg Trophy".

Last year's game, played on Thanksgiving Day, featured a line of -1.5 on Mississippi with Ole Miss winning 31-21.

Over the last twenty games in this series, both teams have vacated once while Mississippi State forfeited another.  The Bulldogs have won 10 of the last 18.  They have won seven of the last ten.

Ole Miss quarterback Matt Coral is a potential Heisman Trophy finalist was playing his final college games before heading to the NFL.

“I get a lot of the credit for coming in here and what’s happened and the wins and losses and all that stuff compared to where it was before,” head coach Lane Kiffin said. “I would argue that he deserves more credit than me for that as the head coach versus the quarterback, because the guy is there when I’m not even there in summer workouts and 6 a.m. workouts and all that.

“I think he’s had a lot to do with changing the mindset of people around here. I think we’ve helped him with that. I think he kind of has taken over or us.”

Mississippi State sat ranked No.24 in the nation at the time this was played.

Mike Leach's team followed up its win over Auburn with a smooth cruise past Tennessee State, winning 55-10. Will Rogers showed out, completing 28 of his 34 passes for 391 yards and five touchdowns.
