You can bet the Kentucky Derby online from Texas at any number of licensed offshore racebooks.
Sites like TwinSpires and TVG that are US-based will not accept customers.
This stance comes as a result of the 2013 dismissal of a federal lawsuit in which it challenged that state's ban on Internet gambling.
"As a result of an adverse court ruling in Texas , TwinSpires.com is suspending wagering activity from Texas residents effective Wednesday, Sept. 25," a statement from a Churchill Downs Inc. and TwinSpires.com said. "We will file an appeal and are optimistic that our legal arguments will prevail."
It's not that Texans aren't able to place bets on horse races, Texas requires residents to register in person. TwinSpires is based out of Kentucky and therefore cannot adhere to these restrictions.
Offshore racebooks will fill in the void as there are countless numbers of Texans looking to place bets on the Kentucky Derby. Being that this is such a huge state, the available race tracks tend to be inconvenient for most living here.
