The Patriots open their 2020 NFL season hosting the Miami Dolphins.  The line on this game opened Patriots -6

Head to Head

Over the last five meetings, the Dolphins have won outright three times.  It should be noted that the two Patriots victories were absolute blowouts.  One was an away game, the other at home.  Both of these New England victories were in the month of September.  The Patriots have covered the 6-point spread in four of the last five games played in September.

Sagarin Line Monitor

Well ahead of the start of this season, Sagarin indicates the line should be New England -13.5, however, this calculation does not account for Tom Brady's departure or Dolphins off season improvements.

What They Are Saying

Nick Goss of NBC Sports Boston writes:

"Miami is a popular pick to be among the most improved teams in the 2020 campaign after a busy offseason that saw the Dolphins spend huge in free agency and make three picks in the first two rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft. One of those draft picks was Alabama's star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who Miami selected at No. 5 overall in Round 1. We don't know if Tagovailoa or veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will start for the Dolphins in Week 1, but it would be cool if the former Crimson Tide star made his pro debut versus the Patriots."

Larry Hartstein of SportsDime writes:

"Week 1 at New England, 1 p.m. ET: Even after last year's shocking regular-season finale, Miami is 6-14 ATS in its last 20 visits to Foxborough. The Under is 11-0 in the Dolphins' last 11 road openers, with an average total score of 31.8 points. Miami was outscored, on average, 17.9-13.9."
