Owner George Hall said of Max Player:

“We’re excited about this horse."

“A lot of the horses we had over time were speed horses," Hall said. “Even in the Belmont Stakes, Ruler On Ice was in the top 3-4 the whole race." (Actually Ruler On Ice sat second, no more than two lengths off the pace set by Preakness winner Shackleford for the first 1¼ miles of the race before he took the lead nearing the top of stretch.)

“This horse is really more of a true closer. We expect him to be off the pace and come running at the end. That’s a little bit unique for how it’s worked out for me historically."

The horse is trained by Linda Rice, annually one of the leading trainers on the New York Racing Association circuit.
