Though we've been down this road before, reports that UFC 249 will take place in Jacksonville, Florida May 9 look less likely to fall through as the coronavirus pandemic continues to shut down most sports. The location and venue of the card have been kept secret by the UFC brass, but the Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer reported Thursday that UFC 249 will take place at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. A person with ties to UFC 249 told MMA Junkie that his flight to Jacksonville has been purchased for fight week.
UFC President Dana White had intended to hold UFC 249 at the Tachi Palace Tribal reservation in California, but came under increasing pressure to cancel the event by California Governor Gavin Newsom and ESPN parent company Disney.
Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis appears to be far more accomodating. Last week he went out of his way to classify Professional Wrestling as an "essential business". Under such guidelines, the UFC should surely qualify.
Florida was among the first states to begin easing its "stay at home" orders, beggining with none other than the Jacksonville beaches.
If UFC 249 happens in Jacksonville, this will mark the third attempt. Betting is available at BetOnline here with odds listed below (subject to change)
