It truly is a rare occasion when the oddsmakers are way off, but that's exactly what appears to have occurred with the Sean Payton prop bet released just yesterday.

Our friends at BetOnline had Payton a crazy -9000 odds favorite to continue coaching the Saints in 2022.  The NO would have paid out $900 for every $100 bet.

Within 24 hours Payton announced he would be stepping away from the organization ahead of the 2022 regular season.

Because the odds were only made available for a short period of time, the exposure was likely limited.  Dave Mason of BetOnline had not reported any suspicious wagering activity (that we are aware of at least) prior to Tuesday's news.

Payton has coached the Saints for 16 years,

Payton is not necessarily retiring.  Instead, he opted to take a break from coaching.

The news of Payton's decision was first reported by NFL Network.

Payton, 58, has three years remaining on his deal with the Saints after signing his latest extension in 2019. So, the Saints would maintain his rights if he decides to return to coaching -- and could require compensation if he wants to coach for another team.

Possible replacements include defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr.

Payton made his mark as the winningest coach in Saints history.  Prior to his arrival, the Saints were often referred to as the Aints. He and  starting quarterback Drew Brees arrived together in 2006 and led New Orleans to the first Super Bowl victory in franchise history in 2009.

BetOnline will be offering odds on the Next New Orleans Saints Head Coach here.
