Cyber Attack on SBTech Shuts Down Sports Betting, Casino

A cyber attack on SBTech has shut down online sportsbooks across the USA that rely on the betting platform.  This includes all wagering in the state of Oregon.  Not that there is much to bet on with most sports on hiatus as a coronavirus pandemic grips the world.

The Oregon Lottery, BetAmerica, Golden Nugget and Resorts are all impacted.  The later two have been operating online casinos during the pandemic.  Both are down due to the cyber attack.

From WSN.com:

Requests by customers and outside media about when SBTech shut down the software went unanswered but the company’s email states that the suspension came over the weekend.

The Oregon Lottery has come under scrutiny and criticism over Scoreboard in recent weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak as the group turned off all of their operating video poker machines due to the closures of restaurants and bars.

To compound the loss of revenue from the inactivity of the poker machines, the Scoreboard app has essentially been non-operational since sports were suspended around the United States earlier last month. Lottery officials admitted publicly that the betting app has been an underwhelming revenue generator, actually losing money since its launch.

SBTech will need clearance from regulators before it is able to relaunch its US servers with no timeline given.

SBTech has a presence in five other US states besides Oregon:

    New Jersey
    Pennsylvania
    Indiana
    Mississippi
    Arkansas

Mississippi and Arkansas only operate land-based sportsbooks, all of which are currently closed.
