Bill Belichick’s team has regained some of its former stature after a fantastic win to the Chiefs just last week. The “most hated team” in the NFL showed us what a polished offensive front can do, and now, they are headed for another fine display of pure talent when they go on the road to meet the Chicago Bears (3-2) and their lacking defense on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm ET.  The New England Patriots (4-2) have enjoyed an easy superiority over the Bears in times past, winning every time throughout their few meetings over the last decade.

Both teams are sitting comfortably on top of their divisions (AFC East & NFC North respectively), but their performances are not necessarily at equal heights of quality; while the Pats stormed through Kansas City’s defense, to add a third win in a row, the Bears struggled to find a good balance and ended up defeated by a field goal difference before the Miami Dolphins. Nonetheless, Chicago is still thought of as a strong team overall, and I believe this is why odds experts –such as our good friends at YOUWAGER.eu- have the Patriots as mild favorite with a -2½ spread. Total stands at 49 o/u.

Last Week Developments

It’s been nearly two years since the Bears and Patriots faced each other for the last time, but we would need to go back for a much longer period of time to find any one match in which Chicago ended up victorious. After Sunday’s game with the Chiefs, it’s become clear that New England is back at the top and could easily grace yet another Super Bowl edition with their presence. On the last game against Kansas City, QB Tom Brady threw for one touchdown and 340 yards, while tight end Rob Gronkowski did his own with 3 successful grabs.

After a convincing win to Tampa Bay on week 4, the Chicago Bears went on a brief break before they faltered once more versus the Dolphins. Even though Miami was without their starting quarterback, they still succeeded to trample on Chicago’s defense. If the Bears hope to shake off Brady and his Patriots, they will need to work on some much-needed improvements on their backend. Despite their shortcomings, QB Mitchell Trubisky didn’t disappoint, by managing zero interceptions and throwing for 316 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Betting Insight

In terms of betting intelligence, the Bears have been able to defend their home ground efficiently, by avoiding losses while at their local turf so far in the season, but they haven’t faced a foe with similar bombastic qualities on the offense yet. The Patriots have amassed nearly 40 points per game through their most recent winning streak and seem headed to impose another heavy score count on Chicago as well. Back at Windy City HQ, It remains to be settled if Khalil Mack will be back on Sunday. The Bears’ linebacker suffered an injury to his ankle during the game with the Dolphins and hasn’t made a single practice since. Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio has stated that, even if Mack has failed to show up for tuning up in the week, he should definitely be part of Sunday’s lineup.

My Prediction: If the Bears were unable to keep it tidy against a crippled Dolphins, I don’t see how they stand a chance versus that well-oiled machine otherwise known as New England. The Patriots have won 14 times ATS –and lost 5- while on their last 19 road games; I think it would be safe to think Belichick’s squad will get plenty of room to overcome that -2½ spread. Pats it is!
