The United States Attorney's Office filed the complaint.

Patz is accused of sending direct messages to four Rays players and one White Sox player on Instagram whereby he threatened to behead them or members of their family.

On March 9, Patz is accused of sending a message via Instagram to a Pepperdine University basketball player.  "Your throat will be severed with a dull knife," the message reads.  It continues "Your entire family will be beheaded and burned alive".

A Toronto Blue Jays player also received a threatening message: "I WILL BEHEAD YOU NIGGER", and "I WILL GAS YOUR DAUGHTERS AND THEN SEVER THEIR THROATS OPEN WITH A DULL KNIFE".

An Oakland Athletics player's wife received the following threat: "You and him will be dismembered together.  I will enter your home while you and your fucktard husband sleep and I will bind you to your bed and sever your necks," he added "Prepare yourself."

Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres players are among those also threatened.

An agent working on the investigation was able to obtain subscriber information from Instagram that traced back to an email reportedly belonging to Patz.

"Based on my training and experience, as well as my review of the relevant evidence in this investigation, I believe that PATZ transmitted these messages and that he did so for the purpose of issuing a threat and with knowledge that the communication would be viewed as a threat."
